Our reporters remain holed up in the High Court at Johannesburg, awaiting
developments in the dramatic case of Stefan vs Sabsy (now being billed in
legal circles as The Swede VS the Turnip).
The case nearly started yesterday, when Sabsy appeared for the first time.
In keeping with the long established traditions of the South African
Judicial System, no evidence was led, and Sabsy was not asked to plead. The
case was then postponed to 11 September, 2002, which is also in keeping with
our fine judicial traditions.
In the meantime, our reporters were able to observe proceedings in the
controversial case of Mofokeng vs the State. Mr Daedalus Mofokeng, a spaza
owner from Kathlehong, appeared before Mr Justice Poggenpoel, seeking an
interdict demanding that the state suspend or repeal the first three Laws of
Business.
Mr Raymond Ackerman, appearing for the State as an expert witness, gave
evidence that the first three Laws of Business were location, location, and
location.
Asked to state the basis of his case, Mr Mofokeng replied: Yes, Your
Worship, but I am sick and tired of doing business in the location.
The matter was dismissed with costs.
