News that the G7 have agreed to debt relief measures for Third World countries,
including Africa, has been welcomed in many quarters.
A statement by the government of Zimbabwe said, however, that the whole thing
was academic, as it hadn't been planning to pay its debts anyway.
More to the point, it said, was How much more they could borrow, and How soon could
they get the money?
Meanwhile, National Railways of Zimbabwe has announced that it is very
pleased that Dett has been relieved. "We were not actually aware that it had
been besieged," said a spokesman. "However, if it has been relieved,
then passengers on the night train from Bulawayo will not be inconvenienced."
