NEWS REPORTS: While gay and lesbian organisations in Britain urged fellow homosexuals to come out or be "outed", President Mugabe of Zimbabwe remained one of the world's leading homophobes.

Date: 1999/11/24

Eminent circles in Zimbabwe have been rocked by the recent outing of the
well-known inventor, academic and political analyst, Professor Isosceles
Vilikazi of Nyamandhlovu.

President Robert Mugabe, the well-known homophobe, commented: The whole
thing is sordid and disgusting, and enough to make me want to be sick into
my Swiss bank account.

Other leading members of the ruling party also expressed their concern,
saying that such things simply shouldn't be allowed. Professor Vilikazi's
behaviour, and specifically the outing, was contrary to good taste and
traditional morals.

Speaking on behalf of a prominent gay rights organisation, Mr (or Miss)
Leslee de Luscious said that people should be free to follow their own
consciences, and the outing of Professor Vilikazi was in fact a very good
thing - so good that he wished he had thought of it himself.

Ms Gladys Dongo, personal friend and confidante of the Professor, observed
that the whole thing was rather fun, and that anyone who thought there was
anything queer about the Professor had rocks in his head.

The controversial outing, our Bulawayo correspondent reports, was undertaken
by train from Nyamandhlovu to Dett, from which the Professor and a group of
students took a game drive into the Hwange Game Reserve. After a picnic
lunch at Guvalala Pan, the party returned to Dett and caught the night train
back to Nyamandhlovu, where a lively discussion ensued on the breeding
habits of the Lesser Spotted Tit.

A gay time was had by all, and it is planned to repeat the outing on a
regular basis.
