Kandahar, Monday.

Gladys Dongo's mission to Afghanistan nearly came to a tragic end last
night, when she had a narrow escape in the streets of Kandahar.

Having halted her advance just outside the city, due to the fact that the
Americans are still just buggering about, Gladys nevertheless decided that
it would be a good idea to check out the lie of the the land.

As her own Raleigh Sports is still out of commission, she borrowed a bicycle
from a local postman, and set off on a reconnaisance. (The postman's
comments on being relieved of his bicycle are not printed
here because this is a family newspaper.)

While cycling through the streets of the city, she was spotted by a group of
Afghans, who became aggressive and pursued her. It was only by desperate
peddling, along with some swerving and knocking down of pedestrians, that
she was able to escape.

Asked how many Afghans there were, Gladys said that she thought there were
about four, plus a couple of Dobermanns and a Rottweiler.

She put the incident down to the fact that she is black, and that postmen's
bicycles usually attract this kind of reaction.
